Shillong, Nov 23: A Border Roads Organisation (BRO) Motorcycle Expedition to commemorate India’s 75 year of Independence arrived in Shillong on Tuesday evening.
The India@75 BRO Motorcycle Expedition team received a rousing welcome in Shillong.
Sunil Kumar Choubey, SE (Civ), Officiating Chief Engineer, headquarter Research & Development Establishment (BRO) welcomed the expedition team.
BRO is conducting India@75 BRO Motorcycle expedition from October 14 2021 to December 27 2021 touching all corners of the country to spread awareness of the contribution of BRO in nation building as part of the celebrations of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.
The Expedition is being conducted in seven legs. State of Meghalaya is being covered in Leg 4 which commenced at Doomdooma in Arunachal Pradesh on November 16 2021 and will end at Kolkata on 26 November 2021.
India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had flagged off the Motorcycle expedition from Delhi on October 14.
The first of its kind, this expedition will cover 20,000 kilometers over 75 days with more than 75 Riders including Officers and Other Ranks from BRO.
The expedition will culminate at New Delhi on December 27 2021 after traversing the entire perimeter of India.
The BRO is a premier road construction agency of India that construct roads, bridges, tunnels & airfields.
It comes under the Ministry of Defence and it came into existence on May 7, 1960 mainly for the development of road network to ease out movement of defence forces to far flung and inaccessible area of North & North East India.
It has a total work force of approx 39000 comprising of Officers & Troops from GREF and Engineers & supporting Corps of Indian Army & Air Force.
BRO has till date constructed around 50000 Kms of roads over 450 pmt bridges of length 44000 Mtrs and 19 airfields in strategic locations, besides construction of prestigious Atal Tunnel (Rohtang Tunnel).
Most of these infrastructure development has been done on the Chinese and Pakistani borders in the treacherous hills of Himalayas.
The mammoth task of cutting the hard rock of Himalayan region is daunting task which has been done easily by high motivating force of BRO.
Construction and development of the road on Umling-la Pass in Ladakh Region of India, is included in the Guinness Book of World record. The achievements of BRO are unending. Some of them are construction of Darbuk – Shyok – Daulat Beg-Oldie (DSDBO) road, construction of Atal tunnel, connectivity to Dokalam – the major conflict point in North East with China, connectivity to Mansarovar through Ghatiabagad-Lipulekh road.
It has imprints in Meghalaya also as Research & Development Establishment of BRO. This Research & Development Establishment is involved in the research and development of new materials and technology that can be incorporated in fast pace construction of roads, bridges, tunnels & airfields.
