Bye-elections: NPP 2, UDP 1, Congress 0

Shillong, Nov 2: The ruling National People’s Party (NPP) wrested two seats from the opposition Congress in the recently held assembly by-elections while the United Democratic Party (UDP) an ally of the NPP won one seat.

The Rajabala and the Mawryngkneng seat which was held by Congress were won by the NPP while the Mawphlang seat was won by the UDP.

In Rajabala, NPP candidate Abdus Saleh defeated the widow of Late Dr. Azad Zaman, while in Mawryngkneng the party’s candidate Pyniaid Sing Syiem defeated Highlander Kharmalki of the Congress.

In Mawphlang, Eugeneson Lyngdoh footballer and son of late legislator S. K. Sunn won after he defeated his nearest rival and Congress nominee Kennedy C. Khyriem.

The NPP now has 23 members in the assembly while its ally the UDP had eight members. The numbers of the Congress has gone down to 17.
