Conrad Sangma clarifies to KHADC Chief, Village Dorbar will be used in Khasi-Jaintia Hills

Shillong, Feb 7: The Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) Titosstarwell Chyne on Monday led a delegation of MDCs from the council to meet Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma to seek clarity on the words ‘Village Councils’ approved by the Cabinet recently.

On January 28, the Cabinet had deliberated on various issues including the use of the words ‘Village Councils’ to amend the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.

“I would like to inform you the Chief Minister has given us clarity about the proposed amendment, especially regarding the Village Council,” Chyne said.

According to the CEM, the Chief Minister has given a clarification that in the proposed amendment approved by the Cabinet the word ‘Village Council’ is also being included with the word ‘Village Dorbars’, which means in Garo Hills they may accept the word ‘Village Council’ but in Khasi-Jaintia Hills the word ‘Village Dorba would be applicable.

“So the question of Village Council in Khasi-Jaintia Hills does not arise. We would like to ensure from our side that the words Village Dorbar should not be removed,” Chyne added.

According to him all traditional practices and institutions should be strengthened as per the proposed amendment of the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.
