COVID-19: Govt decides not to declare whole locality as ‘containment area’

Shillong July 30: The Meghalaya government has decided not to declare the whole locality or village as containment area after detecting a COVID-19 positive case in any locality or village.

Health minister A L Hek instead, informed that the government has decided to have a micro management system to ensure the entire locality or village need not be declared as containment area.

“By adopting micro management, only a portion of the locality or village where a positive case has been detected will be declared as containment area,” Hek said, after his meeting with the district administration and traditional heads on Thursday.

Hek said that after inspecting various containment areas in and around Shillong city, he found out that the present arrangement has caused a lot of hardships to the residents, especially daily wage earners.

“Therefore, we have decided that apart from protecting the residents from the spread of the disease, we also need to think about the livelihood activities of the people,” he added.

On the delay to conduct tests on people residing at Mawbah following the death of a 67-year old woman due to COVID-19, the health minister said that there was a logistic problem in the area.

“I have directed that they should hire a bus to speed up the testing and all contacts were taken for testing on Thursday,” Hek informed.
