Denied permission to discuss suspension of top cops Congress walks out

Shillong, Sep 15: Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh on Wednesday did not allow discussion on the demand to suspend police officers involved in the raid on the residence of ex-HNLC militant, Cherishstarfield Thangkhiew at Mawlai Kynton Massar on August 13.

Following the refusal of the Speaker, the Congress MLAs staged a walkout.

Briefly, after they had walked out of the House, the Congress legislator passed through the corridors of the Assembly building while the House was in session and started to shout slogans against the government.

Earlier, raising a point of order, Mawlai MLA, Process T Sawkmie who was not allowed to take up the discussion said that the government is afraid of what had happened to the HNLC leader.

Before leading the Congress MLAs to walkout of the House, leader of opposition, Dr. Mukul Sangma said they were doing so since the intent of the government was clear that it would be futile for the opposition to engage in discussion and debate.

“We walkout to demonstrate our disapproval and our complete sense of lack of confidence in the intent of the government,” Dr. Sangma said.
