Directorate of Commerce and Industries Partners with NIT Meghalaya to Launch Innovation and Research Centre for Handloom and Handicraft Sector

Shillong, 9th December 2024: In a significant step towards revitalizing Meghalaya’s traditional crafts, the Directorate of Commerce and Industries, Government of Meghalaya, has joined hands with the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Meghalaya, to establish an Innovation and Research Centre in Shillong. This initiative is set to transform the state’s handloom and handicraft sector through advanced research and market-oriented innovation.

Supported under the Raising and Accelerating MSME Performance (RAMP) program by the Ministry of MSME, Government of India, and the World Bank, the Centre aims to foster product diversification, boost marketability, and enhance the competitiveness of the sector while preserving Meghalaya’s rich cultural heritage.

Objectives of the Initiative:
Research and Development: Introducing innovative designs and sustainable production techniques.
Technical Training: Organizing workshops and capacity-building programs for local artisans.
Prototyping and Market Trends: Using advanced machinery and 3D printing to create biodegradable and market-relevant designs.
Market Access: Strengthening MSMEs by expanding their reach and competitiveness.
Key Activities and Phases:
The Centre’s implementation will be executed in three phases:

Phase 1: Designers from premier institutes will study current market trends and customer preferences to craft innovative designs.
Phase 2: NIT Meghalaya will utilize state-of-the-art machinery and 3D printers to create high-quality prototypes based on these designs.
Phase 3: Training programs will be conducted for master artisans, who will collaborate with local artisans and weavers to produce market-ready products.

Shri Friday Sutnga, Director of the Commerce and Industries Department, highlighted the transformative potential of the Centre. He stated:
“This Centre will pave the way for advanced research and innovation, leveraging the technical expertise of NIT Meghalaya to introduce sustainable, market-relevant designs and production techniques.”

This partnership is expected to significantly empower local communities, preserve traditional craftsmanship, and position Meghalaya as a hub for innovative handloom and handicraft products on both national and international platforms.
