Dome of under construction Meghalaya Assembly building at Mawdiangdiang collapses

Shillong, May 22: The dome of the under construction Meghalaya Assembly building collapsed on the intervening night of Sunday. However, fortunately there was no loss of lives in the incident.

According to construction workers staying at the site they heard a loud noise at around 12:30-12:45 am.

Executive Engineer of PWD building, Ransom Sutnga informed that as per analysis the dome collapsed due to faulty design.

“The dome was a heavy structure. Perhaps too much for the columns and the beams to bear. This resulted in the entire structure coming down,” Sutnga, who visited the site, told reporters on Sunday.

He said that the design for the assembly building was vetted by IIT Roorkee.

The Executive Engineer said that after the collapse of the dome now a simpler design will be made in its place.

He also informed that it will take at least two weeks to clear the debris caused by the collapse of the dome.

Sutnga also said that with the collapse of the dome it will cause a delay of eight months to complete the construction of the Assembly building.

It may be mentioned that the construction of the Assembly building started in June 2019 and there were plans to hold the Autumn session of the Assembly session in September this year.
