FIRs filed over circulation of fake news on imposition of lockdown in Shillong agglomeration

Shillong, Sept 21: Two first information reports (FIRs) have been filed against person(s) who circulated fake news on Sunday quoting chief minister, Conrad K Sangma that complete lockdown would be imposed in areas under Shillong Agglomeration.

“The Director of Information and Public Relations, Meghalaya has filed the First Information Report with the Officer In charge, Cyber Crime Police Station, Meghalaya Shillong for taking necessary action as per relevant provisions of law against person(s) for propagating fake news through WhatsApp on 20th September, 2020, which stated that Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma has announced a complete lockdown on Monday and Tuesday in Shillong agglomeration. Lockdown will be used to trace contacts of the cases reported in Shillong. Citizens urged to cooperate fully,” a statement issued by the state government on Monday.

Meanwhile, the Assistant Director (News) Doordarshan Kendra, Shillong also informed that an FIR has been filed with the Station Head Officer, Madanrting Police Station, Shillong against circulation of fake news on social media using the logo of DD News Shillong on 20th September, 2020.
