Shillong Nov 1: The Federation of Khasi Hills District (FKJGP) is strongly opposing the reopening of the road from Them Iewmawlong to Bimola, scheduled for November 4. They believe this move is a ploy to delay the eviction of illegal immigrants from Them Iewmawlong, a demand indigenous people have been making for decades.
FKJGP vice president Kitboklang Nongphlang expressed concerns that these illegal immigrants have been treated with favoritism by the state government, while indigenous people are unfairly targeted. Despite the road’s closure since the 2018 clash between Khasi youth and Them Iewmawlong residents, crimes like drug trafficking have persisted.
The FKJGP is holding the state government accountable for any incidents that may arise from reopening the road and urging them to ignore external interference on the relocation issue. Nongphlang emphasized the need for swift action to protect the rights and interests of indigenous people in the region.
