Shillong, Dec 3: Ex-Speaker and former Congress legislator, Abu Taher Mondol on Saturday joined the National People’s Party (NPP).
Mondol was welcomed into the party by NPP national president and Chief Minister Conrad Sangma in a function held at the party’s office in Lower Lachaumiere.
Sangma also announced that he will be contesting the 2023 Assembly polls from Phulbari constituency on a NPP ticket.
Speaking on the occasion, Sangma said that the Mondol is not new to politics.
“He is a very well known figure throughout the state and a much well known figure in Garo Hills and specially the plain belt region of Garo Hills,†the NPP national president said.
Sangma said that Mondol had shared a relationship with late leader of the NPP Purno A Sangma and worked together in the Congress party. He said that due to this, the joining of Mondol into NPP is a moment of happiness of having an experience of working with such an experienced leader.
Speaking on the occasion, Mondol said that he will try to get the support of the people in the plain belt region for the NPP and in other region too where his service is required.
Stating that stability is an important aspect for overall development of the state, the former MLA said that in the past he was witness to political instability.
Mondol thanked the Chief Minister for making all out effort to see that the benefits of the people of the state are not disturbed because of frequent fall of government.
“I have seen the cohesiveness of the leaders, the team work where every MLAs, Ministers are working together,†he said.
He also praised the FOCUS + programme of the state government stating that it directly benefits the beneficiaries.
