Govt cancels ‘hurriedly signed’, ‘economically unfeasible’ power project

Shillong, Nov 4: The Meghalaya Cabinet today cancelled the memorandum of agreement (MoA) signed between the government of Meghalaya and M/s Sew Energy Limited for implementation of the 65 mw Rangmaw hydel power project.

Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong said that the MoA was cancelled at the request of the private power developer who cited “unfeasibility”.

“The company requested the government to cancel the agreement due to the unfeasibility of the project,” Tynsong told reporters after the cabinet meeting.

The Deputy Chief Minister said that this particular power project was “hurriedly signed by the then government in 2010.

Tynsong also said that when this company started their ground work they found out that this was not feasible at all.

The Deputy Chief Minister also said that the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government also agreed with the contention made by M/s Sew Energy Limited that the project was not feasible.

“Even the present government has also seen that it was not feasible. But you can’t help it the agreement has been signed and ultimately we considered its cancellation and fresh Expression of Interest will be floated,” Tynsong added.

The Deputy Chief Minister said that the term “not feasible” means “not economically feasible”.

“…because these are all private investment… to be invested by the private company,” Tynsong added.
