Govt to audit alleged financial irregularities in Garo and Jaiñtia council

Shillong Nov 4: The Meghalaya government has decided to go for audit into the alleged financial mismanagement in the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) and Jaiñtia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) since the past ten years.

The audit has already begun in the two district councils recently and this may take months to complete and submit a report to the state government.

Sources said that the state government wanted to have thorough audit of the financial matters in the two district councils including utilisation of Central funds allocated to the districts councils under the Special Assistance Grants (SAG) of the Central government for taking developmental activities in the tribal areas.

There are over 1800 employees in the JHADC and around 1,702 employees in GHADC, which has been viewed as overstaffed.

Asked if the audit will complete within a month, sources said that the process may take two months.
