Shillong, Jun 21: The Hynñiewtrep Integrated Territorial Organization (HITO) has said that it is observing the developments with regards to the alleged procurement of Environmental Certificate from the Union Ministry of Environment & Forest by Star Cements Ltd. to carry out limestone mining under Brichyrnot village area in East Jaiñtia Hills district.
“If the allegations are found to be true, then all concerned parties need to be taken to task right from the applicant to the facilitating state agency and all the way up to the issuing authority,” the HITO stated in an open letter to the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government.
The HITO stated that the response of the people against the environmental clearance given to Star Cement to carry out limestone mining was heartening and displays a keen sense of alertness and concern for the welfare of the state at large.
The HITO asked why is the government maintaining stoic silence over the issue.
“If the entire process involved in the permission undertaken by the applicant and the state government is as per all the provisions of the law, then how difficult is it to release a white paper on the matter and save people the trouble of debating over something which is of no consequence,” the HITO stated.
The organisation stated that a feeble and slack response to the matter will only confuse people who are genuinely concerned about the well-being of their motherland.
“The Hynñiewtrep Integrated Territorial organization therefore calls upon all parties concerned to put an end to this issue by laying all cards on the table for natural justice to prevail,” it added.
