HYC writes to West Khasi Hills DC to nullify joint site inspection of regional committee

Shillong, Oct 25: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) West Khasi Hills district unit has written to the Deputy Commissioner, West Khasi Hill district demanding to nullify the joint site inspection conducted by the Regional Committee on October 4 in the disputed area of Meghalaya and Assam.

The HYC opined that Meghalaya -Assam boundary dispute should be settle base on the territorial jurisdiction of the Khasi state/ Khasi Hima which is in line with the paragraph 20 of the Sixth Schedule to the constitution of India.

“Opinion , views and claims of the khasi state ( Hima & Elaka ), KHADC and the Dorbar Shnong is very important with regards to settlement of boundary dispute between the two states,” the HYC stated in the letter to the Deputy Commissioner.

The HYC also said that they were surprised to see in the media report that the Regional Committee of West Khasi Hills district under the chairmanship of Cabinet Minister Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar while conducting the joint inspection with the Assam Government in the disputed area did not invite any traditional heads like – Sirdar, Syiem , Rangbah shnong and even representative from KHADC was not invited .

“We strongly object to this kind of immature and childish behaviour of Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar,” the HYC West Khasi Hills unit said.

The pressure group also expressed that the disputed border area are not Tongkhar’s personal property which he can do as per his wish but they are the territorial jurisdiction of the Khasi Hima.

“…so how can he not invite the concern Khasi Hima and the local headman while conducting the inspection,” the HYC added.
