Guwahati, July 30: The Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) has expressed appreciation for the recent state government decisions reforming the district administration. Mr. Sarat Kumar Jain, Chairman of the Assam and Meghalaya State Council of the Indian Chamber of Commerce, lauded these initiatives as pivotal steps towards decentralized governance and economic development.
Mr. Jain highlighted that the creation of sub-districts would lead to the decentralization of decision-making processes. This reform is expected to facilitate better and faster delivery of benefits to the citizens, ensuring that local needs and issues are addressed more promptly and effectively. According to Mr Jain, one of the most notable decisions is the designation of individual districts as
separate economic centers. From the next fiscal year, each district will have its own Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This move is anticipated to foster healthy competition among the districts, driving economic growth and development.
Mr. Jain also emphasized the multiple advantages of this approach-treating districts as individual economic centers, the state can harness the unique strengths and resources of each district, promoting specialized economic activities and industries. Local businesses will benefit from increased attention and support, encouraging entrepreneurship and innovation at the district level.
Now, With district-level GDPs, the state government will be better equipped to allocate funds based on the economic performance and needs of each district. This targeted approach will ensure more efficient use of resources.
Healthy competition among districts will drive them to improve their economic performance, infrastructure, and governance, leading to overall state development. Mr. Jain concluded by expressing his optimism about the potential of these reforms to transform Assam’s economic landscape. He assured the state government of ICC’s support in implementing these initiatives and contributing to the region's prosperity.
