KSU stages protest against Govt-NHAI failure to repair dilapidated NH-6

SHILLONG, SEP 25: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) East Jaintia Hills Unit on Monday staged a protest against the failure of the State government and the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) to repair the dilapidated NH-6 and asked all drivers not to ply their vehicles for one week.

Some protesters slept in the middle of the national highway at Khliehriat while some turned the potholes into fish ponds and paddy fields during the protest.

The protest was organized after the NHAI failed to fulfil its assurance given to the KSU on August 8, 2023 that the authority will repair the NH-6 within 6 weeks.

Speaking at the meeting, KSU-EJHDU president Streamly N Suchen has threatened to intensify the protest against the government and the NHAI.

“We will continue to protest till our demands are fulfilled,” he said.

He also urged all the drivers not to ply on the NH-6 for one week. Suchen said, “We humbly request you not to ply on the NH-6 from 7pm to 5am everyday for one week due to the bad road condition.”

“This is not a road blockade but it is just a humble request as the dilapidated condition of the road is posing serious threat to precious lives using the road,” he said
