Shillong, Nov 22: The Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), on Sunday stated that the construction of an 18-km-long bridge connecting Assam and Meghalaya will begin soon. This is one of the longest road bridges in the country.
The Ministry informed that the infrastructure sector heavyweight Larsen and Toubro, has emerged as the lowest bidder for the building of the bridge estimated at a cost of Rs. 3, 200.
The four-lane bridge would run over the Brahmaputra river on the National Highway 127 B, from Dhubri in Assam to Phulbari in Meghalaya’s West Garo Hills district.
According to the Ministry once this bridge is completed, it will reduce the distance between the two areas by 203 km.
DoNER Minister, Dr. Jitendra Singh said that this bridge will be a massive boost for north-east transport connectivity.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma tweeted, “The proposed 18 Km-long bridge will be one of India’s Longest Road Bridges that will connect Meghalaya closer to Assam. A major boost to NorthEast’s transport connectivity.â€
