Shillong, Mar 1: Sitting MDC of the KHADC from Mawkhar-Pynthorumkrah constituency, James Ban Basaiawmoit on Friday lodged a complaint against former KHADC chief executive member, and National People’s Party (NPP) candidate, Pynshngaiñlang N Syiem for allegedly violating the election expenditure rule, and indulged in bribery.

“I request you to take legal action against Syiem for violation of Rule 176 expenditure, 193 (1) bribery, Rule 3(2) under influence and Rule 194 (1) and (2) and Rule 195(1) of the Assam Meghalaya Autonomous District (Constitution of District Council) Rules, 1952 (as amended),” Basaiawmoit said in his letter to the Returning Officer of Mawkhar-Pynthorumkrah constituency.

Demanding that an enquiry should be made into the violation of election expenditure rule, Basaiawmoit said that the NPP candidate had clarified in the media that an amount of Rs 80,000 was provided by him for polling agents and volunteers for one polling station.

“There are 28 polling stations in the constituency which amounts to a total of Rs 22,40,000. This has exceeded the expenditure limit within Rs 5 lakh,” he said.

Basaiawmoit also said Syiem’s election agents or canvassers were also caught distributing money to bribe such voters to unduly induce them to vote for the contesting candidate of the NPP.

According to him, documentation was also seized from these two persons, which clearly showed that money was paid to the voters.
