Shillong, Mar 29: Chief Minister, Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday suggested the English
& Foreign Languages University (EFLU), Shillong to start courses on foreign languages particularly Japanese and Mandarin for the benefit of students in the region.
“There is scope in these languages and our youth can take advantage of such courses if made available in the Shillong campusâ€, the Chief Minister told Vice-Chancellor of English and Foreign Languages University Prof. E. Suresh Kumar.
Prof Kumar along with other officials of the University called on the Chief Minister at his office in main Secretariat here on Thursday and sought intervention from the Chief Minister’s office to make the University available for students of Meghalaya in particular and the North East in general.
According to Conrad, there is a great opportunity for the youth as Meghalaya is coming up with various projects with Japan-based companies and if the young people of the State learn the language, it will be to their advantage.
Prof. Kumar said that the central University, which has its campus in Shillong was not used to the maximum as there are very few students from the State, who are enrolled in the University.
Prof. Kumar discussed with Chief Minister the need to start training and orientation programmes for teachers in Meghalaya at the University.
The Chief Minister expressed his concern and assured that he would look into the matter of training the teachers.
