Shillong, Jul. 07:Â MePDCL, in collaboration with the district administration, organised an awareness and live demonstration programme for government officials on smart metres, a joint initiative of the Government of India and the Government of Meghalaya, at the DRDA Hall on Thursday.
During the programme, MePDCL officials stated that the installation of smart metres in other districts of Garo Hills has already begun, and that the same will be done in West Garo Hills, with the installation expected to be completed by November or December of this year. It was also revealed that 40,000 smart metres will be installed for free in the district in the first phase, with no charges for the smart metres for the next five years.
According to SGIL officials, smart metres with built-in GPRS support online bill payment via a mobile app. Officials also stated that 44,000 smart metres have been installed in Meghalaya to date.
