M’laya cabinet approves draft St. Xavier’s University Bill, 2020

Shillong, Nov 4: The Meghalaya Cabinet today gave its approval to the draft St. Xavier’s University Bill, 2020, to be established in the State.

A draft bill of the education department was approved which would be placed during the upcoming Assembly session starting tomorrow for the University to be set up.

The proposed university will be run by the Jesuit (Society of Jesus), a religious order of the Catholic Church. The Society of Jesus has also established St. Xavier’s University at New Town in Kolkata in 2017.

Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong informed that St. Xavier’s is famous and has institutes all over the country.

Tynsong said that the St, Xavier’s University Bill, 2020 has been vetted by the Meghalaya Private University Regulatory Board even as he said that the board was set up after the CMJ University fiasco.

“This application was sent to the regulatory board and it has strongly recommended that the bill be considered in the Assembly,” Tynsong said.

The Deputy Chief Minister said that the present government has learnt through mistakes made by governments in the past.

“We have seen quite a number of so called private universities they did nothing. We will not allow these kind of things to happen and I assure you St. Xavier’s university is one of the most popular and famous institution throughout India,” Tynsong added.
