Shillong, Oct 23: Leader of opposition in the State Assembly, Dr Mukul Sangma on Friday challenged the claim of the State government that there are around 32 lakh metric tons of extracted coal all over the State.
“If proven that 32 lakh metric tons is still there I will quit politics,” Sangma said.
Sangma also said that the opposition Congress will also pressurize the Government of India to take action against the illegalities prevalent in the state.
The former Chief Minister alleged that people indulging in illegal transportation of coal were using the modus operandi of delaying in auctioning the extracted coal whose quantity have been declared before the Supreme Court by the State government.
It may be pointed out that the government had claimed that there are 32,56,715 lakhs metric tons of extracted coal and the Supreme Court in its order passed on July 3 last year directed that the entire extracted coal stocks already identified be handed over to the Coal India Limited for the purpose of disposal/auction as per the rules the CIL and mode and manner formulated by the NGT appointed committee.
“It (auction) is being delayed by the government for reasons known to them. It is being used as a modus operandi to lift and transport the coal without paying royalty,” Sangma told reporters.
The leader of opposition said that the illegalities being indulged in by people is money laundering even as he asked where the royalty that should be accrued to the government exchequer.
He alleged that it is due to these illegal activities that the district councils in Garo Hills and Jaintia Hills are facing financial crunch
