Shillong, Nov 30: Dr. Mukul Sangma who along with 11 other legislators of the Congress merged with the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) last week, on Tuesday said that they decided to join the party based on the palpable feeling of thousands of Congress workers across the state of Meghalaya, the North East and in the country as well.
“They are anxious and wanted an alternative. Our decision to join AITC was based on that,” Dr. Sangma said while addressing journalists in Kolkata.
He also said that their decision to join the Trinamool will be a trendsetter across the North East and the country.
“The pattern will follow in several other states. We are only responding to the collective desire of the people and for the interest of this great nation,” he said.
Dr. Sangma also said that Kolkata is the second home for the people of Meghalaya
He also informed that in the next few months, the Trinamool will set up an organisational framework of the party across Meghalaya.
According to him, people across the country want a political force to counter the BJP.
“More and more people will join the movement under the leadership of AITC Chairperson Mamata Banerjee,” the former Chief Minister said.
He also said that the decision to join the AITC was taken by them in not a matter of months, but years and also after thoroughly assessing the ground reality.
“Didi’s leadership style has made us believe that political dynamics will shift in the coming days,” Dr. Sangma added.
Meanwhile, newly appointed AITC Meghalaya unit president, Charles Pyngrope said they decided by resolution to join AITC and thanked the AITC Chairperson Mamata Banerjee for accepting them in the party
“By joining AITC, we hope that we will be able to fulfil the hopes and aspirations of the people of Meghalaya,” Pyngrope said.
