No-confidence motion against MDA defeated by voice vote

Shillong, Nov 11: The no-confidence motion moved by the opposition Congress against the National People’s Party (NPP)-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government on Wednesday was defeated by a voice vote.

Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh called for a voice voted after Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma refused to withdraw the motion after an acrimonious debate that lasted several hours.

“We will not withdraw the no-confidence motion since the government is not willing to come up clear on several issues raised by us,” the veteran the Congress legislator said.

Led by the leader of opposition, Dr Mukul Sangma, ten other Congress members highlighted several issues regarding development and governance in the state, while participating in the discussion.

The Opposition members raised numerous issues, including mining of coal, irregularities in power sector and management of the COVID-19 situation, besides other health related issues.

Replying to the charges by the Opposition, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma spoke extensively on the several developmental measures that his government has initiated for the welfare of the state.

He also informed the House that Meghalaya has been applauded as the ‘second best’ state in the country for good governance.

The Chief Minister said that the state government had spent 399 crore rupees for ensuring safety of the people of the state facing the Covid-19 pandemic.

He also listed out several allocations made for farmers and other working populace.

Maintaining that the law and order situation in Meghalaya has improved under his governance, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma reminded the leader of opposition, who was then Chief Minister that petrol bombs were hurled at Durga Puja pandals in Ri-Bhoi district in the year 2017.

He said there has been a drastic drop in the cases of abduction and crime against women and children in the state.

On the coal issue, he said that the coal being transported from the State now was through the process of seizure and that the government was earning multi fold revenue due to this.

He also said that all guidelines were being followed in this regard.
