Shillong, November 26, 2024: The High Court of Meghalaya, in collaboration with the Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority, observed Constitution Day today at the District Prisons & Correctional Home, East Khasi Hills District, Shillong, commencing at 9:00 AM.
The event was graced by the Hon’ble Mr. Justice H.S. Thangkhiew, Judge of the High Court of Meghalaya and Executive Chairman of the Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority. Other dignitaries present included Shri E. Kharumnuid, MHJS, Registrar General of the High Court; Smti A.M. Pariat, MHJS, Registrar (Judicial Service); Shri T.T.M. Sangma, MJS, Officer on Special Duty; and other senior officials from the Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority and the District Prisons.
The program began with a welcome speech by Shri T.T.M. Sangma, followed by an address from Justice Thangkhiew. He emphasized the importance of Constitution Day as a time to reaffirm our commitment to the ideals of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity. Justice Thangkhiew highlighted the need to not only remember the Constitution’s principles but also to actively embody them in our daily lives, particularly in safeguarding the secular nature of our Republic.
Justice Thangkhiew remarked, “The Constitution is a living document that must be interpreted in light of contemporary realities, serving as a mirror to our times and a tool to shape our nation’s future.” He urged those present to utilize the services offered by Legal Services Authorities, particularly for marginalized sections of society, including inmates, ensuring they have access to legal assistance and representation.
The inaugural session concluded with a vote of thanks from Shri J.D. Marbaniang, Superintendent of the District Prisons & Correctional Home.
Following the inaugural program, Justice Thangkhiew and other officials conducted an inspection of the jail facilities to assess the conditions and services provided for the inmates’ well-being.
The event also featured legal awareness sessions on Fundamental Rights and Duties, the Basic Structure of the Constitution, and the rights of prisoners. These sessions were delivered by esteemed judicial officers and advocates, fostering an interactive dialogue between the legal professionals and the inmates.
The observance of Constitution Day at the District Prisons & Correctional Home served as a vital reminder of the importance of legal awareness and the continued effort to uphold the rights and dignity of all individuals within the justice system.
Shri F.R. Kharkongor, Principal Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya, administered the ‘Read the Preamble’ pledge to officials and staff at the Main Secretariat Building, Shillong, marking the significance of the day.
