Regional Committees brief government on disputed areas with Assam

Shillong, Sep 3: The Regional Committees set up by the state government which is looking into ways to resolve the decades long border dispute with Assam, on Friday gave a presentation to the Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma.

“So today the meeting was basically to see the first report that was prepared by the Regional Committees,” Sangma told reporters after the meeting.

According to the Chief Minister, the meeting was to take forward the entire process of finding an amicable solution, to the border differences that are there between Assam and Meghalaya.

“Once we have done our homework, we will be having most probably another two to three sittings with these Regional Committees, and these regional committees will, of course, have their own sittings also and once the (Autumn) session is over, then they may be joint meetings and joint visits being done by the Regional Committees,” Sangma said.

The Chief Minister informed that the Deputy Commissioners of Ri-Bhoi, West Khasi Hills and Jaintia Hills gave the government a presentation into the kind of communities that are settled in these villages, the number of villages that are there, the administrative convenience that is there in these villages and if they are in the Meghalaya census or in Assam census, whether they are taking power from Meghalaya or from Assam.

“So it’s more of a detail on the facts and what the current status of those villages are,” Sangma said.

The Chief Minister also added that the officials who made visits to these villages have got some kind of firsthand feedback also as to the mindset of these villagers.

Sangma also informed that when one goes into the details, there is no dispute in a large number of those areas.

“So we are hopeful that in 20-30 percent of these villages, where we have been seeing are under dispute, we may find that actually, there is no dispute in those,” the Chief Minister said.
