Shillong, Apr 24: The state government on April 24 informed that the repair work of the Umiam Bridge is tentatively scheduled to be completed by June 30, 2024, after which the road will be opened fully for traffic.
In a press statement issued here, the government stated that after the completion of the repair work, it contemplates a load restriction of 12 MT for the safety of the structure.
As per the government release till June 30, 2024, vehicles up to the load of 4 MT are allowed to ply over the Umiam Bridge.
“After 30th June 2024 vehicles up to 12 MT only are allowed to ply to ensure long-term safety and structural stability of the bridge,” the statement stated.
The government statement also stated that at present 60 percent of the drilling and grouting works have been completed and as per preliminary reports, it was observed that seepage through the dam has reduced.
According to the press statement based on the technical report submitted by IIT, Guwahati, and the in-situ technical assessment of the structure, the bridge bearings were refurbished by lifting the decking bridge.
“After refurbishment, the bridge has again been brought back to its original position,” the statement adds.
Besides IIT Guwahati Report, an investigation on retrofitting the bridge girder and deck slab is also being taken up with Central Soil & Material Research Station (CSMRS) for preparation of a detailed report and estimate after submission of the report further suitable action would be taken.
The Umiam Dam and Bridge was constructed in 1958 and completed in 1965. During these years, the bridge has been subjected to constant traffic movement. Due to the repetitive and successive loading, it has led to deterioration in the bridge due to fatigue.
The present works are being taken up under the Dam Rehabilitation Improvement Project (DRIP).
The main objectives of DRIP are rehabilitation and improvement of dams and associated appurtenances safety institutional strengthening. The major works under DRIP includes Drilling and Grouting of Dam, Crack repairing and Hydromechanical works.
