Shillong, Nov 4: The Meghalaya Pradesh Youth Congress (MPYC) and the National Students Union of India (NSUI) on Saturday denied that their members resigned en bloc earlier this week.
It may be mentioned that on Thursday, state unit president of NSUI, Bansharailang Pyngrope along with 600 others resigned from the party while on Friday, Fernandes S. Dkhar general secretary of the MPYC along with 400 others also tendered resignation letter.
Banphira Basaiawmoit, president of the MPYC, East Khasi Hills district the resignation of Dkhar was nothing less than a “circus†or “dramaâ€.
Basaiawmoit said that the “common denominator†in all these resignations was that they knew that they are losing the party posts.
Basaiawmoit said that if the former general secretary of the MPYC who is contesting for the posts of MPYC president in the ongoing election process, was unhappy with the procedure, he should have lodge a complaint with the party authorities rather than resign.
He also said that, Dkhar knew that he was not going to win the post of MPYC president and therefore resigned from the party.
“We heard that he resigned along with 400 others. But having the support of 400 youths won’t be able to win you the post of MPYC president,†Basaiawmoit said.
He also informed that the MPYC so far has enrolled 20000 youths in the state so far.
Meanwhile, Basaiawmoit also said that the youth Congress leaders do not have time for gimmicks as there were more pressing issues before them.
Urging the citizens not to be swayed by dramatics being played by certain people of late, he said, “Unemployment in the state especially among graduates and above is in excess of 16 percent.â€
Basaiawmoit also said that Meghalaya is the fifth poorest state in the country and its Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) de-grew in the last financial year.
