Shillong, Jul 29: Former Home Minister Robert Garnet Lyngdoh (62) passed away at his home after a prolonged illness on Friday.
He was elected from the then Laitumkhrah constituency for two terms 1998 and 2003.
As a Home Minister, he was vocal against militancy.
Popularly known as “Bob†he was born on March 10, 1960 and passed his Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management from Xavier Labour Relation Institute, Jamshedpur.
After the death of his father Peter Garnet Marbaniang he contested the elections and won for two terms before he decided not to contest anymore.
Currently his sister Amapreen Lyngdoh is the legislator of East Shillong constituency.
Lyngdoh was suspended by the Congress for six years in 2008.
In 2021 after a hiatus of 13 years he rejoined the Congress.
Before joining politics he was a member of the band “Mojoâ€.
Following the news of his demise, politicians and well wishers visited his house to pay their last respect.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma offered his condolences.
“The fearless Shri R. G. Lyngdoh, former Home Minister of Meghalaya was a personality we all looked up to. Cheerful and witty, Bah Robert was a friend to everyone he encountered. Deeply saddened by the news of his passing. My deepest condolences to @ampareenlyngdoh & his family,†Sangma tweeted.
The Congress party too condoled the death of Lyngdoh.
“His dedication to his people and the state was unparalleled and had contributed immensely to the overall development of our beloved state. He was also a steadfast Congressman,†a statement from the party stated after a condolence meeting held at the Congress Bhavan.
