Shillong All Faiths Forum knocks PM’s door for Swamy

Shillong, Oct. 27: The Shillong All Faiths Forum (SAFF), representing different communities and faith groups in Shillong, call upon the  Prime Minister’s intervention  for a special consideration with the arrest of Fr. Stan Swamy on humanitarian grounds.

SAFF in a  letter to the Prime Minster’s office on Tuesday, submitted  that Fr. Stan Swamy is an octogenarian priest and social worker of a Christian religious Order, and has consistently served the tribal and downtrodden all his life. Also this year has seen the effect of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic in our country as in different parts of the world, and for this reason, an elderly person as Swamy whose age exposes him to the dreaded virus should not have been arrested.

In a letter to Modi, the SAFF – an inter-faith body comprising of Christians, Hindus Muslims religious group, said that the arrest of Fr. Stan has filled SAFF with “dismayed shock” and “surprise”.

“In line with the call for respect of the elderly all the world over, we hope that your good self would also consider our request to intervene for Fr. Stan Swamy to be released on humanitarian and health grounds while the due process is on,” the forum wrote.

“Also this year has seen the effect of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic in our country as in different parts of the world, and for this reason, an elderly person as Swamy whose age exposes him to the dreaded virus should not have been arrested,” the letter read.

According to the reports Father Swamy has been accused of having links to a Maoist plot connected to the Bhima Koregaon, Pune District in Maharashtra case and was arrested by the National Investigation Agency on Oct 08 2020 night.
