Shillong, Jul 21: Volunteers of the Seng Samla Mawlai Pyllun (SSMP) on Wednesday locked up the entrance to the Marten dumping ground in Mawlai Mawiong.
This after Urban Affairs Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar failed to inspect the landfill site, after he assured a delegation of the SSMP to do so earlier this month.
Many trucks which have collected garbage from various parts of the Shillong city were stranded outside the dumping site.
Earlier, this month, a delegation of SSMP volunteers had met Dhar and highlighted the problems faced by the residents of Mawlai over the dumping ground, especially with regards to bio-medical waste being dumped at the site.
They pointed out how a garbage truck from Jaintia Hills district had come all the way to East Khasi Hills to dump garbage at Marten in Mawlai.
The Seng Samla Mawlai Pyllun said that the issue is not profitable to the government and therefore they are turning a blind eye.
“We condemn when it comes to the construction of a shopping mall at at Khyndailad, the Urban Affairs Minister is taking keen interest because he is thinks that it will benefit,” SSMP president Samuel Biam said.
Biam also said that if the government can take loan for the construction of the shopping mall, than what is the difficulty in buying an alternative landfill site.
He also said that due to the of the state government’s unwillingness to solve the issue, it has to take responsibility for the piling up of garbage in and around the city.
