Garo groups protests in state capital against border MoU

Shillong, Aug 22: The chairman of the Joint Action Committee on Border Areas of Meghalaya (JACBOM) Erwin K Sutnga has said that the committee has procured the maps of Hima Jaintia of 1835, the map of 1872 which clearly demarcates the Khasi states.

Sutnga also said that the notification 1876 will be challenged because areas from Khasi Himas were taken to away to Kamrup.

The JACBOM chairman was speaking at the protest organised by pressure groups from Garo Hills like the Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP), Association for Democracy and Empowerment (ADE), Achik Youth Welfare Organisation (AYWO), Federation of Achik Freedom (FAF) and Mallangkona Joint Action Committee held at the statue of U Kiang Nongbah near Civil Hospital Shillong.

The pressure groups were protesting against the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the states of Assam and Meghalaya for the six areas of difference in the first phase.

“These are Sixth Schedule areas the state government cannot touch them without our consent and without constitutional process,” he added.

Sutnga said that the groups are not only fighting for the present generation but for the future of the indigenous people of the state.

“Lands are our right, it is in the flesh and blood of us tribals. If this is snatched then we become beggars,” he said.
