Govt looking to re-open tourism activity

Shillong, Jul 16: Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma on Friday informed that the government has asked the respective Deputy Commissioners to meet stakeholders to discuss ways for reopening the tourism sector in the state.

Sangma who is holding the Tourism portfolio said that the consultation is to find out ways to start opening the tourism sector in a safe manner.

The Chief Minister said that there are options like local tourists, vaccinated tourists, and limited tourists who may be allowed.

“We feel the tourism industry has suffered a lot and therefore we are trying to now see how we could start to relax tourism activity but without increasing the risk of spread of Covid,” Sangma said.

He also informed that at present the State is only allowing people who are vaccinated fully to enter the State without being tested.

“So therefore, if we could use that yardstick for the tourists also in a limited sense it could be an option,” the Chief Minister said.

Sangma said that the Deputy Commissioners have been asked to engage with the tour operators, Health department officials to see if the tourism sector can be reopened.
