Govt to announce reduction of syllabus for students due to COVID-19 pandemic

Shillong, Sept 2: The Meghalaya government would soon announce a reduction of syllabus for students for the current academic year, in view of COVID-19 pandemic.

“The department has already worked out the modalities including reduction of syllabus while taking into consideration the remaining months of the year and absorption capacity of the students,” Education Minister, Lahkmen Rymbui told reporters on Wednesday.

“The percentage of reduction in the syllabus and other issues including the pattern of examination from classes IX to XII will be announced by September 21,” he informed.

In the latest guidelines for the fourth stage of ‘Unlock’, the Ministry of Home Affairs has said that all schools, colleges, other educational institutions will remain closed up to September 30.

The MHA also added that students of classes 9 to 12 may be allowed to visit schools outside Containment Zones with parents’ written consent.

The minister said that teachers can join their respective schools from September 21, to inform their students on any decision taken by the government.

“Students are also advised to visit their schools, not to attend classes, but to seek teachers’ assistance besides submission of assignments,” he said.

Rymbui further said that the department is already prepared to come up with its action plan in case reopening of educational institutions is allowed after September 30.

Meanwhile, the education minister informed that deputy commissioners have been instructed to vacate schools and colleges, used as quarantine centres by September 15.
