Govt’s proposal to bring more students under ambit of post matric scholarship scheme

Shillong, Nov 2: State Education Minister, Lahkmen Rymbui on Monday informed that the department has written to the Ministry of Tribal Affairs to increase the annual income of parents/guardians to Rs. 4.50 lakh so that more students would be eligible for post matric scholarship scheme.

Presently, parents/guardians whose annual income is Rs. 2.50 lakh are eligible for post matric scholarship scheme.

“By increasing so, more students can benefit from the scholarship scheme,” Rymbui said.

According to the State Education Minister, the implementation of revised rate of the Post Matric Umbrella Scheme of Scholarship was decided by the Fee Fixation Committee and notified by the state government for the academic year 2019-2020.

According to Rymbui, the long overdue revision was taken last year and was done after a gap of six years.

The Education Minister informed that the last revision was done in 2014, even as he said that the rates should have been reviewed once in two years.

“Past governments should have reviewed this issue once in every two years but six years have passed, no one has taken care to address this issue and our students continue to get scholarships at a lower rate,” he said.
