GTC shuts gate leading to village, public clashes with army

Shillong, Apr 12: Four members of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) were among other persons who were injured after they were assaulted by personnel of the 58 Gorkha Training Centre (GTC) at Mawshbuit on Monday evening.
The incident occurred after the 58 GTC on Monday evening suddenly closed their gate which was a thoroughfare for residents of Mawshbuit village.
Among those who was injured was the leader of the KSU Mawshbuit unit. It was alleged that he was attacked by a ‘khukri’ when he was arguing with army authorities.
According to the residents, this was not the first instance but the army authorities from time to time indulge in such acts much to the inconvenience of the villagers.
The taxi drivers who were not allowed to pass through the area said that the army alleged that vehicles speed through the area thereby compelling the latter to close the gate.
Soon after getting information, police from the Madanrting police station, magistrates and Sohryngkham MDC, Pyniaid Sing Syiem visited the area and tried to calm the situation.
“From now on I don’t want the discussion to end at the Deputy Commissioner level”, Syiem.
The MDC, who is also the Chairman of the KHADC said that he wants the government set up a High Level Committee to inquiry on the incident.
“Those involved in assaulting our youths and the public should be taken to task as per law of the land,” he said.
