Shillong Aug, 14:Â The event began with the of the National Flag by Dr. Alicia Gatphoh, the Vice Chancellor in the presence of Dr. Indrani B. Bhuyan, Registrar, Dr. Surajit Sen, Deputy Registrar (Exams), Members of the Faculty, Staff and Students. The National Anthem was rendered in full honour with the hoisting of the Tricolour.
Dr. Sen in his inaugural speech reminded the gathering about the significance of “independence” and “freedom” which we are celebrating this 75th year. In her speech, Dr. Bhuyan took back down the lanes of gory past as she talked abou the horrors of partition in consonance with the UGC’s directive to organise
“Partition Horrors Remembrance Day” to make all aware of the cost we had to pay to gain this independence. Dr. Gatphoh, in her speech, gave a historical account of the arrival of British and the Freedom Struggle Movement. She stressed on the sacrifices made by each and every Indian who helped us attain our independence. She exhorted the students to follow the path of righteousness and help contribute towards India’s future growth and development in a positive way.
The day also witnessed to a cultural extravaganza performed by the students of the University. Traditional and cultural dances were performed apart from the rendition of patriotic songs in local languages.
