Shillong, Jan 16: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Sunday slammed the State government for organising a cricket tournament despite the rise in Covid-19 cases.
According to the TMC despite the recent order issued by the State government banning all kinds of official, public and political gatherings to stem the spread of the COVID-19, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma organised a Sports Tournament which is going on in full swing in Police Parade Ground, Tura.
“Hundreds of people were seen flouting covid protocols at the day-night sports tournament,” the TMC said.
The opposition said that given the drastic surge in Covid cases in the past few days with highest cases recorded upto 160 in Meghalaya, the consequences of this 15 day (from 14th Jan- 30th Jan) tournament will be devastating.
“The sheer disregard for the pandemic is extremely alarming when the health infrastructure of Meghalaya is in shambles,” the TMC stated.
The TMC said that this carelessness by the Chief Minister is utterly ‘shameful’.
The party said that, it is not the first time that the Chief Minister is seen to be flouting COVID protocols.
The TMC said that earlier it was reported that Sangma flouted precautionary measures on his visit to Batabari village under Rajabala constituency where a large gathering was held in the presence of newly elected NPP legislator Abdus Saleh.
