Shillong, Nov 20: Meghalaya were handed a defeat by an innings and 38 runs against Jammu and Kashmir inside two days in the U-19 Cooch Behar Trophy in Mangaldai, Assam.
Meghalaya had dismissed J&K for 296 yesterday and then reached 63/2 at stumps. However, today saw them dismissed for 144 in their first innings and 114 in their second after they were made to follow-on.
The good start yesterday was mainly thanks to the innings of 40 by Mrinal Das, who was dismissed a few overs from the end of play. Today, Mrityunjay Bharali tried to be the mainstay for the team but was out for 33, while Sachin Kumar contributed 25. Although there was only one batter out for a duck, none of the others could reach double figures and Meghalaya were all out for 144.
Made to follow-on, the second innings was even more difficult for Meghalaya, though, once again, Das managed a good 28. Sachin, meanwhile, hit 19 but the stalwart for the team this time was Avinash Rai, who finished unbeaten on 48, with seven fours and a six.
There was still a major batting collapse, however, which saw Meghalaya lose six wickets for just 18 runs and they were eventually dismissed for 114, 38 runs short of making their opponents bat again.
Meghalaya’s next match will be against Karnataka from 26 November.
