Umling check post roadblock for cattle traders of the state

Shillong, May 12: Members of the Khasi Jaintia Butchers Welfare Association (KJBWA) have alleged that the Check Post of the Veterinary department at Umling Ri-Bhoi is extorting money from cattle traders.

“Is this place to conduct a health check up of animals being transported or to collect money,” KJBWA president Generous Warlarpih said.

He said that the authorities manning the check post are also taking money for cattle that is coming within the state.

According to him, after the Assam government enacted The Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021, traders from the state do not get any more cattle from Assam and they have to look locally.

Warlarpih said that in order to sustain their business they have to go in search of cattle to Ri-Bhoi and when they return back they are told to pay for whatever they have sourced locally.

He also said that Transit Permits are to regulate cattle trade and are to be given only to those who are in the business.

“But as of today they are being given to everyone, even to those who are not even in the trade,” the KJBWA president alleged.
