Shillong, Jan 10: As many as 13 pressure groups including the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) asked the Meghalaya government to take necessary measures to prevent inflow of immigrants into the state after the publication of the first draft of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam.

The pressure groups also expressed doubt that the state government can control such inflow of people into the state in the absence of rules and regulations while pulling up the state government for its inability to set up even entry and exit point as part of comprehensive mechanisms to tackle influx.

Speaking to reporters here on Wednesday, KSU president, Lambokstar Marngar said that four years have passed, yet the government has not been able to create one entry and exit point even in places where land has been made available.

He said that even the Meghalaya Safety and Security Act, 2016 is yet to be implemented though rules have already been formulated for implementing the act.

“No instruction was given to various deputy commissioners to constitute the district task force to look into the issue related to tenants,” he said.

The KSU leader also said that there was no doubt that people whose names not included in the NRC list in Assam would try to come to Meghalaya for settlement.

“Though the chief minister, has assured to look into the matter, but what kind of rules and regulations that can control this (migration)?” Marngar asked

He also threatened that if people from Assam entered Meghalaya, the situation would compel pressure groups to take preventive measures and would not wait for the government.

The pressure groups also said that if the chief minister wanted the people to remain vigil, and chase away forces that tried to divide the people in the state, he should empower pressure groups to check people who enter into the state and the government should disturb such checking.

Hynñiewtrep National Youth Federation general secretary, Sadon K. Blah said, “When it comes to the demand to implement comprehensive mechanisms or ILP to check influx, we do not look only from a particular angle. We are not against RSS or non-RSS groups, but we are against influx. We consider influx issue not as a political agenda of someone.”

They also demanded that implementation of ILP should be one of the top priorities of political parties in the state.
