NPP’s James K Sangma files nomination, says will raise Meghalaya’s pending issues in upper house SHILLONG, JUN 8: NPP national vice president and former home minister James Sangma filed his nomination on Monday for the lone Meghalaya Rajya Sabha seat. He was accompanied by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, cabinet ministers Sanbor Shullai and Marcuise N Marak, and MLAs of the MDA government. Speaking after submitting his papers, Sangma expressed gratitude to the state’s leadership and alliance partners for backing his candidature. “First of all I am very grateful to the people of Meghalaya, the chief minister Conrad K Sangma, both deputy chief ministers, all ministers, MLAs and also all alliance partners from the UDP, HSPDP, BJP and independent MLA for having supported my candidature for the Rajya Sabha,” he said. Sangma said he had completed the nomination process and was looking forward to the outcome once the electoral procedure concludes. “Today I have just finished filing my nomination and I look forward to being elected after all election processes are over,” he stated. Outlining his priorities if elected, the NPP leader said he would focus on issues pending for a long time and matters that the state needs to navigate collectively in the future. “The responsibility of MP Rajya Sabha if it were to fall on my shoulder, I will look at how many of the issues which have been pending for longtime and also issues which we as a state collectively look at navigating in the future. These are the issues that I intend to be vocal about in the upper house, so that the voice of Meghalaya can be heard in Rajya Sabha,” Sangma said. He described his selection as a collective decision of the MDA and said he was honoured to be chosen unanimously by MDA II. “This decision is collectively made by the MDA, all I can say that I am deeply honoured and privileged to be unanimously selected by the MDA II and all I can that we are here to serve the people of Meghalaya and I will be taking any responsibility given upon me and similarly today the MDA II had given me the responsibility of being the candidate and I look forward to carry out the responsibility,” he said. With Monday being the last day for filing nominations, Sangma noted that it was too early to draw conclusions, but said he felt privileged to be sent as Rajya Sabha MP by the government if the election turned out to be uncontested. “We have to wait till the end of the day, today is the last day of filing nomination so I don't think we can jump to conclusion here but yes if it were to be uncontested but again I feel privileged to be send as MP Rajya Sabha by the government and I will collectively represented the entire state,” he said. On the term of the seat, Sangma said a Rajya Sabha member serves for six years and he intended to complete it. “The term of MP Rajya Sabha is six years, so I don't intend to come back as I will complete the term. It will be very unfortunate for anyone to go there and then abruptly come back,” he said. He also explained that the consensus on his candidature came after consultations among alliance partners. “Consensus means after consultation, whatever differences may have been, it's always a matter of coming together and discussing whatever issue that there is and coming to a unanimous decision, so the consensus was the fact that there was discussion and all the alliance partners decided to forward my name,” Sangma added.
