Nearly Four Decades in Politics: Dr. W. R. Kharlukhi Reflects on His Public Journey Shillong, June 16: Former Rajya Sabha member from Meghalaya, W. R. Kharlukhi, on Tuesday reflected on his political journey spanning nearly four decades, sharing the experiences, challenges and lessons that shaped his career in public life. Speaking to journalists after completing his Rajya Sabha tenure from 2020 to 2026, Dr. Kharlukhi said his association with politics began during his youth and was nurtured by the guidance and mentorship of several senior leaders who inspired him to dedicate himself to public service. Recalling his early years in politics, he said the confidence and knowledge he gained from veteran politicians played a vital role in shaping his understanding of governance and grassroots leadership. According to him, one of the most important lessons he learned was that politics should remain focused on issues directly affecting the lives of ordinary people. Dr. Kharlukhi joined the Hill People's Union in 1986 and contested his first election in 1988. Although the party did not emerge victorious, he described the experience as a turning point that strengthened his resolve and gave him valuable insight into the realities of democratic politics. He also recalled being entrusted with the responsibility of Planning Secretary after the illness of a senior party leader and overseeing preparations for the 1989 MDC elections. Through collective efforts and strategic planning, the party improved its electoral performance and later achieved success in the District Council. In subsequent years, the United Democratic Party also formed the Executive Committee in the Jaiñtia Hills Autonomous District Council. Reflecting on his six-year tenure in the Rajya Sabha, Dr. Kharlukhi said he consistently raised issues concerning Meghalaya and the North East. These included strengthening trade relations with Bangladesh, improving infrastructure and connectivity, creating employment opportunities, protecting indigenous languages and advocating the "Look South Policy" to unlock Meghalaya's economic potential. He said Meghalaya possesses immense opportunities for growth and development, but realizing this potential would require visionary leadership, effective policy implementation and an unwavering commitment to public welfare. Commenting on the state's changing political landscape, Dr. Kharlukhi observed that the emergence of the Voice of the People Party has introduced a new dynamic to politics in the Khasi and Jaiñtia Hills. He said the party currently enjoys considerable public support and could continue to perform strongly if it maintains its present momentum. Concluding his remarks, Dr. Kharlukhi thanked the people of Meghalaya, his political associates and supporters for their trust and encouragement throughout his long public career. He affirmed that although his Rajya Sabha tenure has ended, his commitment to contributing to the welfare and development of Meghalaya remains unchanged.Khasi Hills
