Shillong, October 29: ICFAI University Meghalaya marked a significant milestone on Thursday with the release of a special postal cover by the Department of Posts, Meghalaya Division, at its Multipurpose Hall in Nongrim Hills, Shillong.

Themed “ICFAI University Meghalaya – Empowering Youth and Building Futures”, the postal cover recognises the university’s contributions to higher education, academic excellence, research and human resource development in the state.

Former Rajya Sabha MP Dr Wanweiroy Kharlukhi attended the programme as the chief guest, while Director of Postal Services (HQ) K. V. L. N. Murty was the guest of honour. Vice-Chancellor Dr Alicia Gapthoh also addressed the gathering.

In his address, Kharlukhi emphasised the importance of research, particularly in the Northeast, and said universities should go beyond awarding degrees and preparing students for employment. He stressed the need to instil values, encourage constructive thinking and develop responsible citizens.

He also called for stronger collaboration among universities, industries, government institutions and local communities to ensure that research translates into tangible social benefits.

Kharlukhi appreciated the university’s efforts to make higher education accessible to students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, highlighting the importance of creating opportunities for those who face financial barriers to education.

Speaking on the occasion, Gapthoh highlighted the vision behind establishing ICFAI institutions in the Northeast, aimed at bringing higher education closer to students and reducing the financial burden on their families.

She also outlined the student-support policies of the ICFAI Society, including provisions for free education following the death of a parent and the refund of fees to a student’s family in the event of the student’s death during the course of study.

The programme highlighted the university’s commitment to accessible higher education, research and youth empowerment, while the special postal cover serves as recognition of its role in contributing to educational development in Meghalaya.
