Shillong, July 27: BJP South Shillong legislator Sanbor Shullai has decided to find out ways and means to address growing unemployment problem by encouraging unemployed youth to take full advantage of the various government schemes.

“As an MLA it is my responsibility to find out ways and means how to address the unemployment problem faced by our educated youth,” Shullai told reporters after convening a consultative meeting with officials from at least 28 departments on Friday.

Stating that unemployment is not only a family or a state problem, but is a national problem, he said that the decision was taken after he was approached by many people requesting him to help them get jobs.

“However understanding that government jobs alone cannot accommodate the thousands of unemployed youth, I feel that there is need to find alternative means of livelihood by creating self-employment through the various government schemes,” he said.

He informed that during the meeting, the different departments have been asked to furnish the guidelines of the various central and state schemes besides the fund allocations within six days.

“We will study these schemes and accordingly bring them before the public for information,” Shullai said.

Pointing out that awareness about the various schemes was not up to the mark due to lack of publicity, he said that is why many times after the end financial year, huge amount of unutilized funds have to be surrendered.

“We have requested the different departments to also have a review on the advertisement aspect for the schemes since a budget provision for this is there so that the benefits of such schemes reaches the targeted beneficiaries,” he added.

To a query, the BJP legislator responded by saying, “Everybody can grow in any field if one is sincere.”
