Shillong, Aug 31: The Hynñiewtrep Youth Council (HYC) on Friday sought the intervention of the Meghalaya government into the alleged atrocities by Assam police in villages under Block II area in Ri Bhoi District recently.

The HYC delegation met the Home Minister, James K. Sangma here and demanded that the state government should immediately deploy security personnel to ensure security of the villagers residing in the inter-state border.

HYC general secretary, Roy Kupar Synrem said that recently, an SSA-funded school building, community hall and two IAY houses were dismantled by Assam police at Khliehumwang and Umru village.

The HYC said that an existing police out-post at Mawlasnai is lacking manpower and could not provide adequate security to the villagers.

Synrem said that the Home Minister has assured that he would hold a meeting with the DGP to take stock of the situation and the government would discuss the need to deploy security personnel in the area.

“The state government would want to honour the status quo and would take up the matter in the upcoming meeting to be held at the level of the chief secretaries of the two states,” Synrem said while quoting the Home Minister.

Synrem also said that Deputy Commissioner of Ri Bhoi District during a meeting with the HYC delegation from Ri-Bhoi district on Thursday informed that she had taken up the matter with her counterpart, the DC of West Karbi-Anglong, but the DC of West Karbi-Anglong maintained that the district administration was not aware about the incident in the two villages.

The HYC demanded that if the Assam authorities keep on denying the involvement of Assam police in dismantling the infrastructure, the Meghalaya government should demand from the Assam government to take action against non-state actors for creating trouble in the inter-state border.
