Shillong, June 21: All India Congress Committee (AICC) leader, Luihinzo Faleiro has denied that MLAs of the party are planning to join the regional parties.

“I don’t think it is correct because I met the MLAs and everybody said that they are together,” Faleiro told reporters after chairing a party meeting at Congress Bhavan on Friday.

The AICC general secretary in-charge Meghalaya and some states in the North East admitted that the MLAs are not that happy if the people’s aspirations do not materialized.

“But the solution for this is to meet with each other again and again and tackle this problem at the state level. The organization must also coordinate with them as finally we are serving the people who are the masters,” he said.

The Congress with 19 MLAs sits in the Opposition in the 60-member Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.

Whether there is plan to bring a change in the leadership of the party in the state, the Congress leader said, “It is up to the MLAs and party leaders to discuss. The Congress is a democracy and it is an evolving party. Right now in my meeting with them, nothing of that sort has come.”

Faleiro also said that consolidation, reorganization and restructuring is on the line and this will happen in the next 15 days to one month.

The AICC leader also urged other political parties to work together to protect the interests of the Northeast and they should not be happy to be in the ruling with the BJP for a short time, as the BJP has its own agenda of “annihilating the Northeast.”

“Look at the CAB as an example, the special category status that was accorded to states in the Northeast has been stopped now, and the abolition of the planning commission which had in the past benefited the region and the country. The Northeast has lost everything. Earlier, the Northeast got 80 to 90 per cent grant, and 10 per cent loan but today, it is gone. Whatever money saved and utilised through the ministry of DoNER was for the North Eastern states in the past, but now, they are not giving to the region,” Faleiro said.

The AICC leader appealed to political parties in the Northeast to work together for protecting the interest of the Northeast and fight together to save the region.

He also said that time would come where people would realize the motives of the BJP.

“We have tried its best to enlighten the people on several issues be it losing jobs, collapse of the economy and other policies that affect the people,” the AICC leader said while expressing his disappointment over the defeat of the Congress in the just concluded Lok Sabha elections.
