Umroi MLA urges Govt to reinforce boundary pillars in non-disputed areas

Shillong Sept 13: Umroi MLA, George B Lyngdoh on Friday urged the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government to review and reinforce boundary pillars in non-disputed areas along the inter-state boundary with Assam.

Raising supplementary questions in the Assembly on the last day of the Autumn Session of the Assembly, the Umroi MLA while referring to the Balakhawa incident and alleged encroachment in the area by Assam which is a non-disputed areas, stressed the need to strengthen and reinforce boundary pillars in these non-disputed areas to prevent encroachment.

In his reply, chief minister Conrad K Sangma said, there has been no encroachment by the Assam government and assured that the government will keep a watch.

He said the incident at Balakhawa was related to the construction of a PMGSY road which requires NOC from both sides.

Earlier, the chief minister said that efforts are being made to settle the boundary dispute/area of difference between the two state governments amicably.

In as far as the international boundary pillars is concerned, the chief minister said that maintenance of international border pillars are always decided between the two countries in the joint boundary conference under the purview of the Union Ministry of External Affairs.
