High Court asks Meghalaya Govt to verify discharge of waste, sewage water into Wards Lake, Umïam Lake

Shillong, Mar 11: The Meghalaya High Court has asked the state government to find out whether waste or sewage water and garbage from hotels, restaurants, resorts are being discharged into the Wards Lake and Umïam Lake.

Hearing a PIL on Wednesday, the court said the state shall before the next date (of hearing) carry out inspection to find out whether waste or sewage water and garbage from hotels, restaurants, resorts located in the surroundings of the two lakes is discharged/dumped into these lakes, and if so, what steps the state intends to take for preventing the same.

The court has deferred the hearing on the matter to April 27.

During the hearing, Amicus Curiae, S P Mahanta has informed that inspection of the sites at Umïam Lake and Wards Lake as well as the adjoining areas was carried out by the Advocate General along with him and certain government officials.

The Amicus Curiae has filed his suggestions accompanied by certain photographs.

K P Bhattacharjee, GA appearing for the State has sought for time to file response to the suggestions given by the Amicus Curiae for improving the condition of both the Wards Lake and Umïam Lake and their surroundings.
