Shillong, May 14. The Executive Body of the Meghalaya College Principals’ Council, over the last two days, has expressed deep concern over the ongoing developments at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU). As the sole affiliating university in the state, NEHU plays a vital role in Meghalaya’s higher education landscape, overseeing around 85 affiliated institutions and serving nearly 75,000 students.

Amid recent uncertainties, the Council sincerely appreciates the Examinations Department of NEHU and Prof. Sumarbin Umdor, Controller of Examinations, for their commendable efforts. Despite the challenges on campus, the department successfully conducted the Undergraduate Odd Semester Examinations in November–December 2024, including the first-ever assessments for the 26 Vocational Training Courses introduced under the new UG Curriculum Framework (NEP 2020). This timely action safeguarded the academic progress and future of thousands of students.

The Examinations Department has also taken important steps to collaborate with affiliated colleges on key academic matters, including addressing MOOCs-related issues, framing internship guidelines for the upcoming semester, and preparing admission guidelines to accommodate both CUET-qualified students and those without CUET scores, aligning with UGC’s Standard Operating Procedures.

However, several critical issues at the University level remain unresolved. These include:

Approval of the fourth-year undergraduate syllabi.

Granting of new affiliations and renewal of existing ones.

Amendments to affiliation ordinances and regulations to align with the NEP-based curriculum framework.

These matters require the urgent convening of NEHU’s Academic Council.

In light of these concerns, the Meghalaya College Principals’ Council earnestly appeals to all concerned authorities and stakeholders to immediately address these issues. Doing so is crucial to protecting the educational future of thousands of students across Meghalaya.
